A structured, formal assessment to better understand neurodiversity
An Autism Diagnostic Assessment can help build a clearer understanding of how a person communicates, interacts, and experiences the world.
At Pelorus OT, we approach autism assessment in a neuro-affirming and respectful way. We recognise that autism is a natural variation in how people think, communicate, and engage with their environment.
The goal of assessment is not to “label” or change who someone is, but to support understanding, access, and appropriate supports.
What is the ADOS-2? What does it involve?
The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) is a standardised assessment tool used as part of the diagnostic process for Autism.
It involves structured activities and interactions that allow clinicians to observe communication, social interaction, and patterns of behaviour in a supportive setting.
The ADOS-2 is widely used and forms one part of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary assessment. The ADOS-2 is tailored to the individual’s age and communication style. It may involve play-based activities for children or conversation-based tasks for older individuals.
The assessment may include:
- Structured activities designed to explore communication and interaction
- Observation of social engagement and responsiveness
- Opportunities to express ideas, preferences, and interests
- Adaptation to suit the individual’s communication style
We aim to create a comfortable and low-pressure environment, allowing the individual to engage in a way that feels natural and authentic.
Who is this for?
An Autism Diagnostic Assessment may be recommended when there are questions about whether a person may be autistic and would benefit from further understanding and support.
This may include:
- Children or adults exploring an autism diagnosis
- Individuals referred by GPs, paediatricians, or psychologists
- Families seeking clarity around communication or interaction differences
- Individuals wanting to better understand their own neurotype
How the assessment helps
A diagnostic assessment can provide clarity, language, and direction for supports. It can help individuals, families, and support teams better understand strengths, preferences, and support needs.
The assessment can support:
- Access to appropriate supports and services
- Better understanding of communication and interaction styles
- More tailored therapy and support planning
- Self-understanding and identity (for older children and adults)
Our Approach
At Pelorus OT, our approach to autism assessment is neuro-affirming, strengths-based, and respectful.

- Creating a safe and supportive assessment environment
- Avoiding deficit-based language
- Working collaboratively with families and professionals
- Supporting meaningful, real-world outcomes
Following the assessment, we provide clear and practical information to support next steps.

- Recommendations for supports and next steps
