Understanding communication strengths, needs, and next steps

A Speech and Language Assessment provides a comprehensive understanding of how a person communicates in everyday life.

This is the most common assessment we complete and is often the starting point for identifying communication strengths, challenges, and support needs.

At Pelorus OT, our assessments are strengths-based and practical, focusing on real-life communication rather than just test scores.

Speech and Language Assessment Approach

A speech and language assessment at Pelorus OT combines standardised tools and informal observations to evaluate communication skills in a structured, evidence-based way while also reflecting real-life language use in speaking, understanding, social interaction, and play. Standardised assessments compare skills with age norms, while informal methods such as play and conversation show everyday communication abilities. The assessment is suitable for toddlers through adolescents, and results support NDIS reports, funding, and goal setting. Referrals can be made by GPs, teachers, paediatricians, or directly by families for early support.
