Comprehensive SIL Assessments for NDIS – Melbourne & Adelaide

At Pelorus OT, we provide Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessments to understand an individual’s support needs and determine the level of assistance required to live as independently as possible.

SIL is an NDIS-funded support designed for individuals who require ongoing assistance with daily activities in their home environment. This may include support with personal care, household tasks, and community participation.

Our AHPRA registered occupational therapists conduct detailed, evidence-informed SIL assessments across Melbourne and Adelaide, focusing on real-life function, safety, and sustainable independence.

What is a Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessment?

SIL Assessment

A SIL Assessment is a comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessment used to determine whether an individual requires supported living arrangements and, if so, the type, level, and frequency of support required.

The purpose of a SIL Assessment is to:

  • Understand the individual’s functional capacity in daily living
  • Identify areas where support is required for safety and independence
  • Determine the appropriate level of support (e.g., hours per day, overnight support)
  • Provide evidence-based recommendations to inform NDIS funding decisions

SIL assessments are typically required when individuals are exploring or reviewing supported living arrangements.

What is Covered in a SIL Assessment?

Our SIL assessments follow a structured approach similar to a Functional Capacity Assessment, with additional focus on support needs within a home environment.

Background and Participant Overview

We gather detailed information about the individual’s history, current supports, goals, and living situation.

NDIS Goals and Support Context

We review the participant’s NDIS goals and ensure recommendations align with their long-term outcomes and independence.

Functional Capacity in Daily Living

We assess the individual’s ability to complete:

  • Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as personal care, hygiene, dressing, and eating
  • Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) such as cooking, cleaning, shopping, and managing appointments

Cognitive and Psychosocial Factors

We assess areas such as:

  • Decision-making and problem-solving
  • Memory and attention
  • Emotional regulation and behaviour
  • Ability to manage daily routines

Environmental and Living Considerations

We evaluate:

  • Current or proposed living environments
  • Safety risks and accessibility
  • Suitability of the environment for independent living

SIL Reasonable and Necessary Criteria

Our reports align recommendations with the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary criteria, ensuring that all suggested supports are appropriate, evidence-based, and directly related to the participant’s needs and goals.

Assessed Level of Support

We determine the appropriate level of support required, which may include:

  • Level of supervision required
  • Active vs passive support
  • Overnight support needs

Frequency and Intensity of Support

We provide recommendations on the frequency and duration of supports, based on the individual’s functional needs.

Roster of Care / Support

Where appropriate, we outline a recommended roster of care, providing a structured overview of how supports may be delivered across a typical day or week.

Summary and Recommendations

The report includes clear, evidence-based recommendations to support SIL funding decisions and long-term planning.

Our SIL Assessment Process

At Pelorus OT, we follow a structured and transparent process to ensure high-quality outcomes.

1. Initial Consultation

We begin with an in-depth consultation to understand:

  • The individual’s goals and living situation
  • Current supports and challenges
  • Input from family and support networks

2. Functional Assessment

We conduct a comprehensive assessment of the individual’s abilities in real-life contexts, including daily routines and living tasks.

3. Follow-Up and Observations

Where required, we may conduct additional sessions or observations to ensure a complete understanding of support needs.

4. Draft Report Preparation

We prepare a detailed SIL assessment report outlining findings, analysis, and recommendations.

5. Internal Clinical Review

All SIL reports are reviewed by a senior or Head Occupational Therapist to ensure clinical quality and consistency.

6. Release of Draft Report

The draft report is shared for review and factual clarification where required.

7. Final Report and Sign-Off

The signed report is released upon completion of administrative requirements and can be used for NDIS planning and decision-making.

Important Considerations

Similar to Home Modifications and Assistive Technology Assessments, SIL assessments are detailed and require careful evaluation of multiple factors, including safety, independence, and long-term sustainability.

We encourage participants and families to approach this process with patience, as thorough assessments lead to more accurate recommendations and better long-term outcomes.

While we provide comprehensive assessments and well-supported recommendations, final funding decisions are made by the NDIS or relevant funding body, and outcomes depend on their individual criteria and processes.

At Pelorus OT, we take a person-centred and neuro-affirming approach to SIL assessments.
