Supporting safe, comfortable eating and drinking

Eating and drinking are an important part of daily life. They support nutrition, health, independence, and social connection.

Some adults may experience changes in how they swallow, which can make mealtimes feel stressful, tiring, or unsafe. These difficulties can develop suddenly, such as after a stroke, or gradually over time due to neurological or medical conditions.

At Pelorus OT, our Speech Pathologists support individuals to eat and drink more safely and comfortably, while maintaining dignity, independence, and enjoyment of food.

Swallowing and Mealtime Support

What is Swallowing Support?

Swallowing difficulties are clinically known as dysphagia. These can affect how food and fluids move from the mouth to the stomach.

Dysphagia may occur due to:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Parkinson’s disease or other neurological conditions
  • Motor neurone disease
  • Age-related changes

Swallowing support involves understanding how a person eats and drinks, and identifying ways to make this safer and easier.

This may include:

  • Assessing swallowing safety and efficiency
  • Recommending food and fluid textures using IDDSI guidelines
  • Supporting positioning and pacing during meals
  • Providing strategies to reduce fatigue or discomfort

Signs You May Benefit from Support

Swallowing difficulties can look different for each person. Some signs may be obvious, while others are more subtle.

You or your family may notice:

  • Coughing or choking during meals
  • Feeling like food is stuck in the throat
  • Taking longer than usual to finish meals
  • Avoiding certain foods or textures
  • Needing to clear the throat frequently
  • Unexplained weight loss or reduced appetite
  • Frequent chest infections

These experiences can impact both safety and confidence during mealtimes.
